“Before you add another light, add C02.”
— ED ROSENTHAL
The importance of carbon dioxide cannot be understated in the cultivation process. Having robust C02 levels ensures optimal plant health and maximum yield.
Plants create sugars using the process of photosynthesis which is powered by light.
The light is used to separate water’s two elements oxygen and hydrogen. The oxygen floats into the air. The Oxygen is combined with CO2 to create sugar, which is used as food to power metabolism and to grow.
As noted in the Cannabis Grower’s Handbook: Cannabis is a C3 plant so it gathers carbon dioxide only when it is photosynthesizing. With adequate light and water, the plant absorbs more CO2 when its concentration in the air increases. This increases the plant’s photosynthetic efficiency, producing more sugars, resulting in faster growth.
The 420 ppm of CO2 found in the Earth’s atmosphere is on the low end of the continuum of C3 plants’ ability to use it as an ingredient for photosynthesis. Outdoor plants growing in the bright light of summer grow heavier and faster when supplemented with CO2. Raising the level of CO2 up to 0.15% (1500 ppm), or a little less than four times the amount usually found in the atmosphere, increases plant growth rate significantly.
When plants are growing in an enclosed area, there is a limited amount of CO2 for them to use. Under bright lights, CO2 is used up quickly. Enclosed gardens with no ventilation are also rapidly depleted to the point where the photosynthetic rate slows to a virtual stop at 200 ppm. Only when more CO2 is added to the air does photosynthesis resume!
The text goes on to reveal that C02 levels of between 800-1,500 parts per million (ppm) will increase cannabis plant growth tremendously. These numbers are far higher than what’s found in the natural environment. Therefore, supplementation is a must for cultivators whether the garden is inside or out.
Options for C02 Enrichment
Some cultivators utilize C02 generator machines that deploy sensors and regulators. While this method is effective, it can also be cost-prohibitive—especially for craft or home growers.
There are also other tricks, such as placing a C02-producing compost pile near an outdoor garden. Fermentation from home beer brewing kits may also provide a small amount of C02 but not enough to raise the levels to that 800-1,500 ppm sweet spot. Hanging products like mushroom bags are also viable but tend to have a shorter life span.
If you are a craft grower, I have a cost-effective, reliable, and easy solution for you
Supplementing C02 with Green Pad
The Green Pad C02 generator is a great option. As one of the most popular C02 supplement tools on the market today, Green Pad’s solutions are consistently well-reviewed thanks to their ease of use and impressive results. They’re perfect for cultivators who need to boost their C02 without the added expense of machine generators.
Created by a legacy cultivator seeking a better way to boost crop health, the Green Pad suite of products is specifically made by growers for growers. While it may look like a plain sheet of paper inside a bag, the Green Pad is actually quite sophisticated yet incredibly effortless to deploy.
Company founder Mark, a longtime grower, cannabis advocate in his community, and Ed devotee who started his garden in the late 1970s debuted the Green Pad in 2009 as a viable way to help fellow cultivators boost their yields.
“At that point, there were very few ways to effectively add C02 to an indoor garden,” he explained. “A lot of hobby growers did not want to set the expense they needed to set up tanks and sniffers and burners—our product is perfect for these cultivators.”
How Green Pads Work
The Green Pad contains a proprietary blend of carbon and acids that react to moisture, creating C02 via a chemical reaction. The multilayered pads are spritzed with plain water, activating the C02 production. Humidity within the garden continues the cycle, but additional sprays of water now and again help to kickstart the process.
A built-in hanger makes them easy to place at the top of your canopy, helping evenly distribute the carbon dioxide as it falls to the ground. Green Pads generally need to be replaced every two weeks but have nearly unlimited shelf life prior to use, a benefit over alternative methods like mushroom bags.
To see if the pad needs to be replaced, simply mist the pad. Listen close, a fizzing sound indicates a reaction —silence means the pad’s compounds are depleted and a new one should be placed.
For modest gardens between 200 and 400 square feet, the original Green Pad is ideal. Spaces over 800 square feet should look to the GDP (aka Grand Daddy Pad), which has the power of four individual pads. Some growers find the GDP model works best when a moderately damp sponge is placed inside, as this ensures there is always moisture, even in drier conditions.
However, once canopy space begins to exceed this size, it may be a good idea to consider exploring other traditional methods of C02 supplementation such as generator tanks. While a bigger investment, the overall production capability may be more suitable for larger grows.
C02 and Clones
Carbon dioxide is also a crucial component of the propagation process as it can help promote clone health and accelerate rooting. Photosynthesis produces oxygen, an especially important compound for cannabis roots, a part of the plant that tends to be the most at risk for oxygen depletion.
Fortunately, Green Pad offers a Jr. model for this purpose.
Designed to fit securely inside humidity domes, Green Pad Jr. gives you higher strike rates, less leaf yellowing, and faster rooting by 2-3 days or more, allowing you to move healthy rooted cuttings and seedlings to veg faster. Because they work rapidly, the pads should be replaced every other day.
“There had never been any commercial products for putting C02 in clones, nor had anybody really given it much thought,” Mark said. “People that see it work are very impressed by how much faster the cuttings start rooting, and how the leaves stay nice and green.”
The Green Pad Jr. requires very little if any water since they react to the high levels of humidity within the clone tray. However, a gentle spritz will activate the C02 production automatically if needed.
Green Pad - A Viable and Efficient Option for Generating C02
Supplementing C02 levels in the cannabis garden is one of the foundational ways growers promote plant growth and yield size. And while there are many different ways to go about generating carbon dioxide, the Green Pad method is arguably one of the most convenient and innovative options on the market today.
Great for craft growers, the Green Pad products are simple and cost-effective. While cultivators in larger gardens may want to consider investing in machine generators or tanks, Green Pad is a good option in small tents, closets, and gardens up to 800 cubic feet.

Hey Mark. I just wanted to thank you for creating a CO2 product that everyone can agree on that your product is better than all of the other products like it in the market and is safe to use. I formerly stocked several CO2 products in the past that customers wanted me to stock. I had the first product from out of Canada from Supernatural called the Excellofizz Puck. I had the first mushroom product called CO2 boost. Then MyCO2 Mushroom product and then the TNB Natural product. None of those items were separating themselves from the pack. I then discovered the Green Pad in lieu of their Green Pad Jr. product that made since to me to stock because it was made specifically for the clone dome. It was a unique product amongst other CO2 products. Customers loved their result so much that they asked me to stock the larger sizes to compare to the other products for larger grow areas. All of my skeptical customers have come back asking for the Green Pad. They make the comment that the Green Pad works superiorly and no longer wants to use the former products. I now only stock the Green Pad. My customers stopped buying the other products in the market. They hands down without question prefer the Green Pad product over all of the others.

As a store owner, customers always ask me about CO2 and the benefits of using it. Still, several are discouraged from trying it because of the initial cost of buying a traditional tank and regulator or burner. The Green Pad is a great tool to have that helps introduce the customer to CO2 that is inexpensive and, best of all, they WORK! I have sold more CO2 generation systems of all types because of the Green Pad. Thanks a lot, guys keep on rocking.

"GREEN PADS are truly an innovation and the best alternative solution for adding CO2 to your garden. Unlike mushroom bags, GREEN PADS produce consistent CO2 levels, and CO2 production does not vary from pad to pad-like the mushroom-based CO2 products. One pack of pads produces the same amount as the last pack you bought, plus they don't expire! GREEN PADS are perfect even for experienced growers who don't want the hassle of tanks and regulators, the dangers and heat of NG/LP CO2 generators, or those who just can't afford the upfront cost of CO2 equipment. For those with disabilities, THE GREEN PAD is a godsend. No equipment to set up and no more lugging heavy tanks back and forth! As a disabled veteran and experienced grower, I use nothing but the GREEN PADS to add CO2 to my indoor gardens!
GREEN PAD JRs is the only product specifically designed for adding CO2 to your clones and seedlings. While anyone can easily use THE GREEN PAD JRs and see great results, THE GREEN PAD JRs is a must-have product for commercial growers. THE GREEN PAD JR will shave off days off rooting, leading to faster crop production. THE GREEN PAD JR pays for itself! Bottom line – THE GREEN PAD and GREEN PAD JR are the best ways to add CO2 for plants in all phases of growth."

GREEN PADS are one of the best ways to add CO2 into my garden. I don't have to worry about buying an expensive setup with lots of equipment, and I don't have to deal with mushroom bags that expire. The only maintenance you have to do is spray them with a little bit of water to keep them going (moisture activated) and just change them out every week.

I bought these after seeing them in a hydro magazine. They're like Swiffer sheets that release CO2. I put one in my 4x2x5 space, and several experienced outdoor 'gardeners' asked me what I was doing to promote the growth I was getting, so they must've been working. I saw its tail off after about a week and a half, even less time if you're always spraying it, so just let it hang out if you've got a solid humidity level. I'm writing this as I buy another pack of these because I don't have the $200 for a CO2 system's initial investment. So you'll need at least two packs for a 10-15 week cycle in a small space like mine.
I want to thank you for providing a much cheaper and safer way for growers to utilize CO2. A couple of weeks ago, my CO2 regulator broke, and I found myself in a situation where I couldn't afford to replace or fix it. A friend of mine purchased these pads about a month ago and has been swearing by them. After hearing him praise them for how fast he noticed a difference in growth and health, I figured it was a good alternative for me until I could afford to replace my regulator.
In the past week of using the pads and being someone who has used CO2 for years, I would highly recommend them to anyone. The results are amazingly close to the effectiveness of other CO2 programs. So far, I have used them in a 12x6x8 room. I am using 3 pads at a time in the room and am sure I could use another one. The coverage is great, be sure to properly seal your room and manage your exhaust just like when you use any other CO2 enrichment. What I am curious to try out now is the new jr. pads for domes and clones. Judging by the pictures, I can't wait to try them. Just waiting until I can find them at my local shop.
Thank you again for providing growers with a much more affordable and effective way of introducing CO2 into their gardens!! They will now be part of my system that I know I can count on.
I purchased THE GREEN PADS with slight disbelief. How do these work? Will they help my plants? Why should I buy these pads? Well, after talking to a guy at one of my favorite shops about CO2, I thought I should give them a try. He was telling me that CO2 is like steroids for your plants. He was not lying. I bought the pads and the mini pads to go into my cloning domes. When I got home, I followed the easy step directions. Lightly misted the pads and hung them in my room above my plants. Turned off my exhaust fan and left for about an hour. Came back, and I swear they looked a little larger than when I left. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I repeated the process a few more times during the day, and once more before I went to bed. When I woke up in the morning, I was amazed at what I saw. The plants had increased in size without a doubt. Less than 24 hours went by, and I could see a significant amount of growth! These pads are amazing!!! I would recommend these to anybody. THE GREEN PADS truly work, and you will see results immediately.
Hi, met this guy at a ****, and he told me about the pads. Since I started, my seedlings all came up within 3 days. They were an inch! It was amazing! Never seen anything like it. I added it to the flowering room, and the FLOWERS increased in girth like more than twice in size in a week. OMG! Whatever it is, I am sure it is safe and will buy more for every crop. Please enter met to win a free product. Can you send me any samples of your mini pads. Also, is it ok to cut your larger pads for smaller rooms?
THE GREEN PAD Responds: DO NOT CUT THE GREEN PAD

"I got a pack at the LA expo. I'm new to the indoors and had no idea what kind of difference they would make. I have a 2x4x6 room and had great success in the past. I figured, does it need it, will it be too much, but the price is right if it doesn't work, no big loss - within two days, the leaves got huge, the buds are fuller and tighter, and the pads are the only difference I made, and it was amazing. Now the pads are a must for every crop. Thanks, GREEN PAD!
My only problem - sometimes the excess water would drip off the pad onto leaves, burning them. I put another plastic bag under the pad to catch the excess-perfect."
THE GREEN PAD Responds: MAKE SURE TO MIST THE GREEN PAD TO AVOID DRIPS
The pads are working fantastic. I even use them on my cuttings. It reduces the rooting time by 3-4 days.
I use a BC Northern Lights Bloom Box. I purchased a pack at the Expo, and within a couple of days, there was a notable difference in growth. The plants are definitely much fuller and growing taller. Fantastic.

Got em at the show. My "babies" were looking kinda droopy, and since I started using the pads, they have really, I mean really perked up. I'm gonna keep using them until the harvest is ready, and I'll keep you posted along the way. I can't believe the results that this product has given. Don't go up on the price, PULEEZE! ;-)
